We’re here to help. Follow our simple step by step guide to achieve a fabulous painted floor in your home using Farrow & Ball paint. For this guide we will be using Farrow & Ball’s Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat and Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell.

Step 1:

If your wooden floor has a coat of varnish on it, you’ll need to give it a light sand to make the surface porous again. This will also give you a lovely smooth finish on your floor. There will be lots of dust so be sure to keep the door to the room closed and cover anything in the room you don’t want dust on. You should also consider painting your skirting if it needs a coat of paint as you’re newly painted floor will show up your skirting.

Step 2:

Clean the dust off the floor and wipe down sanded surfaces with sugar soap and warm water. This will remove all traces of dirt, dust and grease.

Step 3:

Ensure the surface is dry and then mask the edge of the skirting board that meets the floor with masking tape. Mask all areas of the room which you won’t be painting. We recommend using Washi Masking Tape to make it easier to remove the masking tape after painting.

For Knotty or Resinous Wood Preparation: Heat the knot to draw out any excess resin (we recommend using a hot air paint stripper). Scrape off any residue resin, and then thoroughly clean the area with white or methylated spirit. Allow the area to dry thoroughly before continuing. Apply Rustins Knotting for sealing knots to prevent bleeding through paint film. Allow 1 hour to dry before priming. Clean brushes with methylated spirits.

Step 4:

Priming and undercoating is a crucial part of the painting process when it comes to painting a wooden floor. Wooden floors experience a high level of traffic and therefore it is important to use the recommended primer and undercoat that will ensure your paint holds up and wears well over time. It also ensures your final colour turns out exactly how you want it to. When painting a wooden floor with Farrow & Ball we recommend using Farrow & Ball’s Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat. The primer and undercoat comes in 4 different colours to suit your topcoat colour. These are:

  • White & Light Tones
  • Red & Warm Tones
  • Mid Tones
  • Dark Tones

We have a list below to help you choose the correct primer and undercoat colour for your topcoat.

Give your Farrow & Ball Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat paint a good stir and if you’re using the roller for the first time, use a spray bottle to lightly coat it with water and spin the water off . This will help reduce fluff and help the roller absorb more paint. As the Two Fussy Blokes say “Always rinse and spin before you begin”.

Cut in around the edges using a brush and then use your roller to paint the whole floor. Apply two coats of Farrow & Ball’s Wood Floor Primer & Undercoat.

Step 5:

Once the floor is primed and undercoated, apply your topcoat of Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell. Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell is a semi-gloss/sheen that's extremely hardwearing, and works beautifully on wooden floors. This water-based paint finish can be applied with a brush and/or roller. We recommend using Two Fussy Blokes rollers for an extra smooth finish.

Farrow & Ball Modern Eggshell is an eco-friendly and ultra-low VOC, meaning low odor. It's quick drying in 2 hours and ready for recoating in 4 hours.

Give your paint a good stir and if you’re using the roller for the first time, use a spray bottle to lightly coat it with water and spin the water off . This will help reduce fluff and help the roller absorb more paint.
